Novation Europe is leading a pilot project, sponsored by the EU Delegation to the UK, exploring how European researcher diasporas based in the UK can be better activated to increase UK participation in Horizon Europe.
Our first phase has focused on mapping these communities as well as the informal connections and factors that underpin collaboration amongst European researchers.
What emerges is that participation is not only a question of awareness or calls. It is shaped by trust, existing relationships and the settings in which European researchers interact.
We are now moving into the next phase of the project, where we will test a small number of practical interventions focused on:
• awareness (information and navigation)
• brokering (connecting people into collaboration pathways)
• mentoring (building confidence and experience)
The aim is to understand what actually works, for whom and in what context, and translate this into a practical Playbook for UK institutions and stakeholders, aimed at European researchers in the UK.
More to follow as the pilot interventions take shape. Do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to know more in the meantime.
